A Meaning of Erudition to the Solitary Elderly Women of the Phenomenological
Park Mi-Koung

Abstract
This study aims to investigate how the meaning of erudition and process of erudition take an effect on the solitary elderly women in order to understand the ¡®meaning of erudition¡¯ to them based on the stories that they experienced in the setting of Korean value and sentiment. In this study, the phenomenological method was used. 65 solitary elderly women who study Hangul and computer in a Hangul class are the object of this study and in-depth interviews and observations are taken place. For them, the meanings of erudition are shown such as ¡®erudition is ceaseless zeal¡¯; ¡®erudition is a friend¡¯; erudition is power¡¯. Under the ¡®erudition is ceaseless zeal¡¯ theme, three sub-themes are found: ¨ç Thirsty for erudition ¨è Enthusiasm for erudition ¨é Eagerness for new knowledge. Under the second theme ¡®erudition is a friend¡¯, ¨ç comfort life ¨è support from children and ¨é compassion to a partner are sub-themes. The third theme ¡®erudition is power¡¯ has shown two sub-themes: ¨ç delight to learn and ¨è restoration of self-esteem. How the solitary elderly women impose meanings on erudition contains many significant insights in the practical fields of social welfare. In a passive aspect, the examination on how erudition impacts on their life practically helps to intertwine their needs with the practical care system. And if understood in an active aspect that is related to the rest of their life, it will be a touch stone to direct policy and service toward elderly erudition corresponding to the Korean society and culture.
